The Arakan Army is collecting population data from Rohingya residents across Maungdaw Township, according to local sources, raising concern among community members about how the information may be used.
The data collection is being carried out across multiple villages and wards. Residents said individuals are being recorded based on age and gender, with categories separating those under 18 and those above 18. The process appears to focus on identifying population numbers and family structures in each area.
Sources said the information is being gathered using existing household lists that were previously issued and contain stamps from local administrators. There are also reports that new documents may be issued later with official Arakan Army stamps.
Following the data collection, authorities are expected to conduct a verification process to confirm the accuracy and completeness of the information. Some areas in Maungdaw have already undergone this verification stage, according to local sources.
Rohingya residents said the process has created uncertainty and concern within the community, as many do not know the purpose behind the data collection.
“We don’t know why they are collecting all this information. People are worried about how it will be used,” one Rohingya man told Rohingya Khobor.
Another resident said, “They asked about every family member, their age, and details. We just followed because we have no choice.”
A Rohingya woman shared, “Everyone is talking about this. We are afraid but also waiting to see what comes next.”
Residents said they remain uncertain about the intention behind the data collection and continue to closely observe the situation as it develops.
