Buthidaung Township, January 17, 2025: The Arakan Army (AA) has enforced a set of stringent new rules in Buthidaung, adding to the already harsh conditions faced by local residents. The new measures were announced today and include the following directives:
- Ban on Bangladeshi SIM-based Telephone Services: All communication services operating on Bangladeshi SIM cards, which were previously allowed with a commission system, are now completely banned.
- Curfew Implementation: A strict curfew has been imposed, restricting movement from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
- Prohibition of Gatherings and Transport: Residents are forbidden from gathering in groups of more than three people. Additionally, the use of motorcycles and boats in local rivers is prohibited.
- Mandatory Village Patrols: Villagers are now required to organize patrols to protect their communities. Each village must form three to four groups, with around ten people per group, to take on this responsibility.
These measures have caused widespread anxiety among the residents, who feel increasingly trapped under the AA’s rules. The ban on Bangladeshi SIM cards has disrupted communication, making it harder for families to stay connected or call for help in emergencies.
The curfew and restrictions on movement have further crippled daily life and economic activities. Many families, who rely on fishing and transport for their livelihood, are now unable to operate freely.
Residents in Buthidaung are appealing for attention from the international community to address the increasing control and exploitation by the AA. These rules have heightened the already fragile situation, leaving people fearful of what might come next.
