by ARNA | May 26, 2025 | Press Release
The Arakan Rohingya National Alliance (ARNA) expresses profound sorrow and indignation over the reported deaths of approximately 427 Rohingya refugees who perished in two separate boat tragedies off the coast of Myanmar earlier this month. These incidents, occurring on May 9 and 10, represent the deadliest maritime disasters involving Rohingya refugees in recent history. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the vessels were carrying individuals fleeing dire conditions in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, and conflict-ridden areas of Rakhine State, Myanmar.
The desperation that drives our people to undertake such perilous journeys is a direct consequence of the sustained persecution, statelessness, and humanitarian neglect faced by the Rohingya community. The ongoing violence in Rakhine State, including orchestrated attacks by the military and Arakan Army on Rohingya civilians in northern Rakhine, has further worsened the already dire situation, triggering mass displacements and a sharp increase in desperate attempts to flee via dangerous sea routes.
ARNA condemns the international community’s failure to address the root causes of this crisis effectively. The reduction in humanitarian aid, particularly the significant funding cuts to UNHCR operations, has severely impacted the provision of essential services to Rohingya refugees, leaving many with no viable options for safety and dignity.
We urgently call upon:
- The United Nations and International Bodies: To initiate comprehensive investigations into the recent maritime tragedies and hold accountable those responsible for policies and actions that endanger the lives of Rohingya refugees.
- Donor Countries and Humanitarian Agencies: To restore and increase funding for refugee support programs, ensuring adequate shelter, healthcare, and protection for displaced Rohingya populations.
- Regional Governments: To uphold their obligations under international law by providing safe harbor to refugees, refraining from forced repatriations, and collaborating on durable solutions for the Rohingya crisis.
- The State Administration Council: To cease all forms of persecution against the Rohingya, recognize their ethnic and citizenship rights, and create conditions conducive to the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees.
The loss of 427 lives is not merely a statistic; it is a stark reminder of the human cost of inaction and indifference.
ARNA stands in solidarity with the victims’ families and all Rohingya people striving for justice, safety, and recognition. We reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the rights and dignity of the Rohingya and urge the global community to act decisively to prevent further tragedies.
