Today starts the virtual three-day summit hosted by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with US President Joe Biden as well as Chinese and Russian leaders set to attend.
The 10-member group of ASEAN had invited Chan Aye, who is the Director-General of the Myanmar Junta-appointed foreign affairs ministry in the chief’s place.
A Junta spokesman said on yesterday that, sending a junior figure could “affect our country’s sovereignty and image”, and no Myanmar representative was present at the opening of the virtual summit.
Earlier, Foreign ministers from ASEAN excluded Myanmar Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing for non-cooperation to the ASEAN proposed plan.
