A Rohingya man was brutally assaulted as he went to fish in the river near his village.
At around 6pm on Sunday, 21 year Abdullah from Sidurkul, Pungná cwéng in Akyab township was attacked by a gang of Rakhine miscreants. As Abdullah cried for help, a group of Rohingyas from the neighbourhood mobilised and rescued him from the attackers.
The Rohingyas were told by their attackers that the entire violence was their fault. Witnesses say the attackers were from surrounding Rakhine settlements.
Pungná cwéng lies in the midst of a hostile Rakhine neighbourhood and residents have long been prevented from moving out of their neighbourhood to earn a livelihood. The only means of income comes from fishing but going to the river means risking attacks from hostile Rakhine neighbours. The Rohingya settlement suffers from chronic food shortages owing to the blockade.
Activists allege anti Muslim groups have systemically imposed a blockade especially on the isolated settlements. This has been described as a well planned strategy to create food shortages and force Rohingyas to move out of their territory and migrate out of the country. The plan is devised to force Rohingyas out of Arakan without attracting undue international attention.
