Yesterday, the city of London Corporation’s freedom applications committee has decided that they will suspend Myanmar’s 1st State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi’s Honorary Freedom Award rather than revoking it which she received in May 2017.
Sir David Wootton, who is a member of the freedom applications committee said, “The City of London Corporation has today sent a clear message that the violence in Burma and the oppression of that country’s minority Rohingya population cannot be allowed to go unchallenged. The freedom applications committee will now inform Aung San Suu Kyi of the court’s decision.”
According to City A.M reporting, the committee stated that the situation in Burma should be criticized “in the most absolute terms.” but reasoned that it was “difficult to judge Aung San Suu Kyi personally without knowledge of her level of responsibility”. Yet Oxford and Dublin have revoked the award on the grounds that she has failed to speak out or condemn the atrocity crimes that being carried out by the states on the Rohingya.
