Bangladesh authorities said the Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested 11 people and seized a large shipment of cement that was allegedly being smuggled into Myanmar during a coastal patrol operation on 18 January.
According to Coast Guard officials, the operation took place in a coastal border area after authorities received intelligence information about an attempted illegal shipment. Surveillance was carried out before personnel moved in to stop the transport.
Officials said the suspects were attempting to move a large quantity of cement across the Bangladesh Myanmar border without legal authorization.
Investigation and legal action
A Coast Guard spokesperson said the seizure was part of ongoing efforts to prevent smuggling and maintain security in coastal and border regions. He said the cement was being transported in violation of existing laws.
The arrested individuals were taken into custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated. Authorities said they are also investigating whether the group is connected to a wider smuggling network operating along the border.
Smuggling along the border
Smuggling activities have reportedly increased in recent years along the Bangladesh Myanmar border. The area’s coastal geography and extensive river routes make it vulnerable to illegal trade.
According to officials, commonly smuggled goods include food items, fuel, and construction materials such as cement, which is in high demand in conflict affected areas of Arakan State.
The Bangladesh Coast Guard said it will continue regular patrols and strict monitoring to curb illegal activities and maintain control over border waterways.
As of the latest update, no further details were released about the destination of the seized shipment or the identities of those arrested.
