Noakhali, March 22, 2025

The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized two fishing boats carrying a large quantity of potatoes intended for illegal transport to Myanmar on March 21, according to officials.

The operation was conducted early Thursday morning in the Meghna River near Char Ataur under Hatiya in Noakhali. Coast Guard personnel acted on information about a suspected smuggling attempt in the area.

During the operation, officers searched two boats and recovered approximately 760 sacks of potatoes. The total value of the seized goods is estimated at around 570,000 taka.

Officials said the potatoes were being transported illegally to avoid taxes and were planned to be smuggled into Myanmar.

When Coast Guard members approached, those involved in the smuggling attempt fled the scene. No arrests were made.

The boats and seized goods have been taken into custody, and legal procedures are underway, according to authorities.

Officials said operations against smuggling and other illegal activities in coastal and river areas will continue.
