Dhaka, May 21, 2025 — Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, has warned that the country cannot absorb another wave of Rohingya refugees and urged the Arakan Army (AA/ULA) to halt the ongoing displacement of Rohingya communities inside Rakhine State.
“Bangladesh doesn’t want another influx of refugees. It simply can’t afford this,” Dr. Khalilur said during a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday.
He acknowledged that while the largest movements occurred between early 2023 and late 2024 amid escalating conflict between the Arakan Army and Myanmar junta forces, smaller groups of Rohingya continue to cross into Bangladesh seeking safety.
“We are working with international partners to prevent a renewed humanitarian crisis,” Dr. Khalilur added. “We have also asked the Arakan Army to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure that the rights and safety of Rohingya communities are protected.”
He further noted that any future cooperation between Bangladesh and the Arakan Army would be shaped by the group’s treatment of Rohingya civilians and its willingness to prevent further violence and displacement.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir were also present at the briefing.
