The Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) arrested 122 fishermen and seized 19 boats on August 29 for allegedly fishing illegally in the Arakan waters along the Rakhine-Bangladesh border.
Patrols in Coastal Areas
According to BGB officials, the arrests took place during patrols between morning and afternoon in the Naiksyangdia and nearby Jaliapara areas. A deputy commander confirmed that Bangladeshi fishing boats have been entering the waters near Shahparir Island and surrounding areas despite restrictions.
Breakdown of Detainees
Among those detained, 29 were Bangladeshi nationals, while 93 were Rohingya Muslim refugees. The boats and equipment used in the fishing expeditions were seized, and the detainees are currently being processed under the law.
Increase in Illegal Fishing
Although the Bangladesh government has restricted fishing in Arakan waters, incidents of illegal fishing have been on the rise. Coastal security forces of the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government have also reported that Bangladeshi fishermen are being caught almost daily in these waters.
Strict Measures to Continue
BGB officials stated that strict action will continue in order to prevent further illegal fishing along the border and to ensure maritime security.
