Cox’s Bazar, August 18, 2024 — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested two Chakma youths near the Taungpyo border, with one accused of having links to the Arakan Army (AA), according to Bangladeshi media reports.
The detainees were identified as Oloi Chakma (24), a Myanmar national from Mi Taik village in Maungdaw Township, and Nayan Chakma (30), a Bangladeshi citizen from Rangamati district.
Arrest Inside Bangladesh Territory
The arrests took place on Sunday, August 17, at around 12:30 p.m., about 300 meters inside Bangladeshi territory near Border Outpost (BOP) 34 at Taungpyo.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commander of BGB’s Cox’s Bazar Battalion-34, confirmed the operation, stating that the two men were detained within Bangladesh and taken into custody for questioning.
Suspected Links with AA
Preliminary information suggests that Oloi Chakma was allegedly involved in activities connected to the Arakan Army, an ethnic Rakhine armed group currently engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the nature of these alleged links or the possible charges the detainees might face.
Context
The arrests come at a time of heightened tensions along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border, where both junta forces and the Arakan Army have intensified operations in northern Rakhine State. The situation has raised concerns in Bangladesh about security, cross-border infiltration, and the presence of armed actors in the region.
