BGB Member Mohammed Belal Dies While Rescuing Rohingya Refugees from Capsized Boat in Naf River

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh – March 22, 2025 —

A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Mohammed Belal, tragically lost his life during a rescue operation in the Naf River, after a trawler carrying Rohingya refugees capsized near Shah Porir Dwip, Teknaf, in the early hours of Saturday.

The trawler, reportedly carrying between 60 to 70 Rohingya individuals fleeing violence and instability in northern Arakan, overturned due to strong river currents. While 25 people were rescued by BGB and local volunteers, at least 40 remain missing, raising fears of further casualties.

A Rescue Mission Turned Tragic

According to eyewitnesses, Mohammed Belal was actively engaged in the rescue efforts when he was swept away by the currents. Despite the risks, he persisted in helping those struggling in the water. His body was later recovered by fellow rescuers.

The incident occurred amid a recent surge in Rohingya attempting to flee Arakan State by boat, as armed conflict and displacement worsen under the Arakan Army’s (AA) expanding control.

Rohingya Community Pays Tribute

Members of the Rohingya community, both inside Bangladesh and in the diaspora, have expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt gratitude for Mohammed Belal’s ultimate sacrifice.

“He died trying to save our people. This is not just a loss for Bangladesh—it’s a loss for humanity,” said a Rohingya elder in Kutupalong camp, speaking to Rohingya Khobor.

Another Rohingya youth added, “He didn’t see us as refugees or outsiders—he saw drowning people. That’s the kind of courage the world needs.”

Honoring a Life of Service

Government officials and BGB officers have paid tribute to Belal, calling him a hero who upheld Bangladesh’s humanitarian principles. Human rights groups and local civil society members have also joined in mourning, emphasizing that his actions reflect a broader duty to protect the vulnerable.

His death underscores the growing humanitarian crisis along the Bangladesh–Myanmar border, where desperate Rohingya continue to risk dangerous crossings for survival.

A Call for Justice and Protection

As search operations continue for the missing, the incident has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for international protection for Rohingya fleeing violence in Arakan State.

Mohammed Belal’s bravery has become a symbol of solidarity and compassion. His actions remind the world that even amid geopolitical tensions and statelessness, human dignity and courage still shine through.
