Bangladesh Border Guard officials say they have seized eight cows that were being brought illegally from the Maungdaw side of the Myanmar and Bangladesh border. The incident took place on November 27 near Border Pillars Fifty and Fifty One.
Local reports said cattle traders from Maungdaw had gathered with more than one hundred cows in hopes of selling them to buyers from Bangladesh. During the attempt to move the cattle through an unauthorised route, BGB intercepted eight of the animals.
Some Bangladeshi news outlets reported that five BGB members crossed into Myanmar territory and took the cows by force. BGB denied this claim, saying the seizure occurred on Bangladeshi soil after smugglers tried to move the cattle across the border.
The seized cows belong to traders from Bawdula Market in northern Maungdaw. Local residents on both sides of the border said the cattle trade often increases during this season as herders attempt to move livestock through informal crossing points.
Authorities in Bangladesh said surveillance has been increased in the area due to repeated attempts to move cattle, goods and people through illegal border routes.
