The Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) intercepted 50 Rohingyas who entered Bangladesh via a human trafficking network operated by the Arakan Army (AA). The group was sent back to Maungdaw, Myanmar, on November 16 at 8:00 PM.
Sources revealed that the Arakan Army charges 600,000 Myanmar Kyats (MMK) per person for these perilous journeys. On November 15, traffickers smuggled the group into Bangladesh, but BGB swiftly detained and deported them.
This incident follows reports of the network transporting 300 Rohingyas, including children, from Buthidaung to Maungdaw on November 14, where they were detained and extorted before being moved further.
The ongoing exploitation of the vulnerable Rohingya community has alarmed human rights organizations. Continued violence in Myanmar forces many Rohingyas to seek safety, making them susceptible to trafficking.
Authorities in Bangladesh are being urged to enhance border security to curb such operations, while international organizations call for stronger protections for the Rohingya against exploitation.
