On Thursday, BTRC said the details of technical aspects of providing SIMs to Rohingya refugees has been finalized after visiting camps on the ground and a report has been sent to the concerned cabinet. If they get a green signal from the concerned ministry, BTRC will start supplying SIMs to Rohingyas in order to stop the using of Myanmar SIMs inside Bangladesh territory and reduce the criminal activities in camps.
BTRC also said, “Nearly 10,000 mobiles are being used in each camp. Myanmar and locals are taking SIMs from local operators. As SIM registrant and user is different person, many of the culprits manage to flee after committing crimes.”
“BTRC will start process of SIMs distribution to 12 years old and above Rohingyas on the basis of smart card and relevant documents provided by UNHCR to them” once permission is received, BTRC added.
