China’s President Xi Jinping stated that China will support Bangladesh in its BRICS membership and efforts to find a long-term solution to the Rohingya issue. “If you join BRICS, I would always support you (Sheikh Hasina),” he remarked.
In a private meeting on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping provided these guarantees to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The foreign minister, AK Abdul Momen, made these remarks while quoting the president of China.
After the meeting at the Hotel Hilton Sandton on Wednesday evening, Momen said in a media briefing that Xi wants to resolve the Rohingya issue through tripartite engagement of China, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
As reported by Momen, Sheikh Hasina wants to return the Rohingyas back to their homeland land because they are posing a threat to regional stability. because a large number of them work in the illicit trade in weapons and drugs. “Peace is necessary for development,” she said.
“China will help Bangladesh in finding a long-term solution to the Rohingya problem,” the President of China said and also added that instability is not something we want in the area. Additionally, he underlined China’s desire to support Bangladesh’s infrastructure, renewable energy, and energy needs.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister asked Xi Jinping for help in expediting the implementation of some Chinese-funded projects. These initiatives are currently on hold due to a lack of financing. Xi agreed to investigate the situation. Xi also stated that he will take steps to lower China’s international trade deficit.
