China’s special envoy Deng Xijun has come to Dhaka to discuss the Rohingya repatriation. He arrived in Dhaka last Sunday on a three-day visit. On Monday (July 31), he held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen in Dhaka.
He also paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.
Diplomatic sources say that the talks in Dhaka discussed the Rohingya repatriation initiative, especially the pilot project under the tripartite initiative of Bangladesh, Myanmar and China. China’s special envoy visited Myanmar before visiting Bangladesh.
Under the tripartite initiative, Bangladesh and Myanmar are trying to start repatriation of Rohingya, albeit on a limited scale.
This year there was an attempt to start the repatriation before the onset of monsoon. But it could not be started. Discussions are underway to start repatriation in the future.
However, Western countries, including the United Nations and the United States, are against starting repatriations now.
They feel that the situation in Myanmar is not favorable for repatriation. Bangladesh insists that repatriation will be voluntary. No one will be forcibly returned.
