A community-based doctor was fatally attacked in a knife assault at a Rohingya refugee camp in Teknaf on the evening of February 16, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 PM in Camp 13, where the victim, Dr. Ramko Nurhakim, was attending to patients at a local clinic.
Dr. Nurhakim, the son of Nur Islam and a resident of Block B5 in Camp 13, was urgently called from his home to provide medical treatment at a clinic in Block C. While treating patients, an unidentified young man entered the clinic, escorted the doctor outside, and attacked him with a knife. Dr. Nurhakim succumbed to his injuries on the spot as the assailant fled the scene.
Eyewitnesses have since identified the attacker as Sweyod Ullah, the son of Habir Rahman, who is believed to be a member of the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO) and resides in Camp 13, Block E1. A community member stated that these details have been corroborated by several witnesses within the camp.
Local authorities and camp security forces arrived promptly after the attack and initiated an investigation. “We are working closely with law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the suspect. In addition, security measures are being reinforced in the area to prevent further incidents,” said a camp official.
The killing of Dr. Nurhakim has sent shockwaves through the Rohingya community. Known for his dedicated service to displaced refugees, his tragic death has sparked widespread grief and condemnation among camp residents, who are calling for justice.
With violence and insecurity already high in the camps, this incident further intensifies concerns for the safety of healthcare workers and humanitarian staff. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the suspect to come forward and assist in the investigation.
