Rakhine State, Myanmar, August 2024: The escalating conflict between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar junta has plunged Rakhine State into a severe humanitarian crisis, leaving many, particularly the Rohingya community, in dire straits. Since the AA’s offensive began in November 2023, the junta has imposed strict restrictions on movement and work, exacerbating the plight of the already vulnerable population.
Impact on Livelihoods and Basic Needs
The junta’s measures, including blocking major roads and waterways, have significantly disrupted daily life. Many Rohingyas, especially those in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, are facing acute food shortages and rising commodity prices. A resident of Dar Paing, an IDP camp, highlighted the struggle, stating, “The 43,000 MMKs provided by WFP for one person is not enough for a month. A bag of rice costs 150,000 MMKs. We can’t survive on this aid alone.
Local subsistence workers, who once relied on small trades like selling betel leaves, have lost their livelihoods. One such worker from Dar Paing shared, “I can’t sell betel leaves anymore. We are down to one meal a day. My children are starving, and it breaks my heart.
Displacement and humanitarian crisis
The conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands. Residents have fled their homes, seeking safety in remote areas. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) reported that over 500,000 people have been displaced across Myanmar since October 2023 due to intensified clashes. In Rakhine State, entire townships like Pauktaw and Ponnagyun have been emptied as civilians flee the violence.
Blockade and Limited Aid
The junta has blocked essential humanitarian aid, including from organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which has warned of a “catastrophic impact on people’s health” due to these restrictions. Villages are running low on food and medical supplies, with hospitals and clinics overwhelmed and unable to admit new patients.
International Response
Human Rights Watch and other international bodies have condemned the junta’s actions as violations of international humanitarian law, calling for urgent international intervention to lift the blockades and ensure aid reaches those in need. The ongoing conflict, marked by indiscriminate bombardments and severe human rights abuses, demands a robust and immediate response from the global community to alleviate the suffering of the Rohingya and other affected populations in Rakhine State.
