On 19 April, 2023 around 12:05 am a devastating fire broke out at block C9 of Leda camp 24 in Teknaf. More than 40 Rohingya shelters including 3 learning centers run by NGOs have been burnt to ashes in the fire.
According to refugees, the fire started from a learning center and it instantly broke out around the block. In the mean time, refugees from neighboring camps rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after hours of attempt. As soon as refugees brought the fire under control, the firefighters came and watered over cinder.
A Rohingya victim of the fire told Rohingya Khobor (RK) that 3-5 masked miscreants fired three rounds to create panic among the refugees. Within moments, a fire broke out in the learning center run by an NGO CODEC. Immediately the fire went out of control and the refugees came forward to douse it. but failed. While each refugee was busy with the fire, some unscrupulous gangs looted their houses.
“Fire burnt down my everything in a moment ahead of Holy Eidul Fitre,” another Rohingya said and also added that some nefarious circles blazed their shelters to make them shelter less.”
One of fire extinguishers said that it took time to reach the spot for the blockage of barbed wire fence amidst the road. The people managed to extinguish the fire after cutting the barbed wire fence.
