Maungdaw Township, Myanmar, June 21, 2024: On June 21, 2024, the Arakan Army (AA) launched a drone attack that left several Rohingya villagers injured in Maung Ni village, Maungdaw Township, Arakan State. The attack, which occurred around 10 p.m., saw the AA deploy drones from Pan Taw Pyin village, dropping bombs that struck Ruhul Amin’s house, resulting in injuries to three individuals, including Mohammad Yonus, the son of Abubakar Siddique, and another villager.
The recent escalation in violence between the AA and Myanmar military forces has significantly impacted the local Rohingya population, forcing many to evacuate their homes. The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread fear and displacement among the villagers, who have sought refuge in Maungdaw downtown and other safer areas.
Local sources report that the fighting has intensified, with both sides exchanging heavy artillery fire. The AA, seeking greater autonomy for Rakhine State, has increased its assaults on military positions, leading to significant casualties and displacement across several townships, including Maungdaw and Buthidaung.
The Rohingya community, already marginalized and vulnerable, faces an escalating humanitarian crisis. Many residents of Maung Ni village have fled to downtown Maungdaw, fearing further attacks and increased violence. The broader conflict has also seen the AA capture numerous military outposts and launch aggressive offensives in the region.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians, particularly the Rohingya, who continue to suffer amidst the ongoing conflict between the AA and Myanmar military forces.
