The Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained eight men for attempting to smuggle three hundred seventy five bags of fertilizer toward the Rakhine side of Myanmar. The arrest took place on December 6 near the Bakkhali River in Cox’s Bazar.
Coast Guard officials said the operation began shortly after midnight on December 5 following confidential information about a planned smuggling attempt. A team intercepted a fishing boat that appeared suspicious and conducted a search.
Lt. Commander Siyam ul Haq said the team discovered the fertilizer bags onboard. The total value is estimated at one hundred eighty seven thousand five hundred taka. The eight men on the vessel were taken into custody.
Coast Guard officials confirmed that legal action is being processed under Bangladeshi law.
