June 18, 2024: Intense clashes erupted in the south of Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, as military council troops stationed in Padin and Du Chee Yar Tan exchanged fire with Arakan Army (AA) forces positioned in Pan Taw Pyin village. The exchange began late at night and involved both small arms and artillery fire, according to local sources.
The No. 5th Military Division, based in the capital city, launched a series of rocket and heavy weapon attacks into the conflict zones, leading to significant destruction. The explosions reportedly burned down three Rohingya homes, further distressing the residents.
The violence particularly affects the Rohingya community in Pan-Taw Pyin, prompting many villagers to flee to nearby areas. The ongoing conflict has heightened fears and insecurity among the local population.
The region has been under severe strain with previous conflicts and rising tensions. Over 1,000 residents in Maungdaw found themselves trapped due to blocked exits and the presence of junta troops, who have restricted movement and intensified security checks.
Additionally, recent clashes between the Myanmar Armed Forces (MAF) and the AA in nearby townships have displaced thousands, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
These clashes form part of a broader pattern of violence in Rakhine State, where both sides have engaged in heavy fighting, leading to numerous civilian casualties and widespread displacement. The humanitarian situation is dire, with restricted access to aid and essential supplies. The conflict has also led to significant disruptions in transport and trade routes, impacting the delivery of goods and humanitarian assistance.
Local and international observers are closely monitoring the situation as the hostilities continue to escalate, further destabilizing the region and causing severe hardships for the affected populations.
