There is total panic in the village tract of Rohingya Taung (Ywet Nyo Tong), Buthidaung South, after Hlun Htein alleged 40 men from the village had joined the resistance.
Much of the recent clashes have taken place in Maungdaw North, and locals say there is little evidence to show anyone from their area have joined the resistance so far. Considering the situation, the allegation that there are 40 fighters in the village is absurd, say locals. The BGP has not even given any names, fuelling suspicions the story of insurgents from Rohingya Taung is an excuse to launch an unprovoked attack on the village.
The BGP men have however said on Monday that unless the senior community leaders make a list of the fighters, there will be trouble from the authorities.
On the same day, the border police arrested a father and a son from the area on charges of terrorism and took them to their camp. Relatives fear they have been mercilessly tortured in custody. The arrested men have been identified as Syed Alam, 56, and his son Jalal, 23.
Mistreatment in custody is common in the notorious prisons of Arakan state where more than a hundred Muslims have been tortured to death in custody since 2012.
