A fire broke out at the Darbar Hall of the CIC office in Camp 2W on February 6, 2026, at around 12:10 pm, briefly disrupting activities at the facility before being brought under control by community members and volunteers, residents said.
According to local people who assisted in extinguishing the fire, the incident was caused by an electrical fault. Witnesses said the fire started suddenly, with smoke spreading quickly inside the hall.
Community members, SMS volunteers, and staff responded immediately and worked together to control the fire. Some people climbed onto the roof of the building to help put out the flames. The fire was contained within a short time, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the office.
No serious injuries were reported. However, one woman sustained a back injury while trying to escape the hall amid the crowded situation, according to people present at the scene.
The fire damaged several official items inside the Darbar Hall, including electric fans, sofa chairs, tables, and tin materials.
At the time of the incident, more than 200 people, including women, were inside the hall. An official team from BRAC was distributing financial assistance for agricultural activities, including home vegetable gardening on the roofs of shelters. The support is part of a monthly program aimed at helping Rohingya households improve food security.
After the fire was extinguished, authorities inspected the area and confirmed that the situation was fully under control. Further safety checks are expected to be carried out to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Residents said the incident highlights ongoing fire risks in the camps, particularly in crowded public spaces, and stressed the importance of rapid response and preventive safety measures.
