Camp-26, Cox’s Bazar – January 25, 2025
A fire broke out late last night in Camp-26, Block C, in the Rohingya refugee settlement, reportedly due to arson. The blaze, which began at approximately 9:30 PM, caused widespread panic but fortunately resulted in no casualties.
According to witnesses, the fire started on the roof of a shelter and quickly spread, fueled by a flammable liquid suspected to be petrol. “We were inside our home when we smelled something burning, like petrol. When we went outside, we saw flames rising from a nearby roof. It was terrifying,” said Ismail, a resident of Block C and a block committee member.
Community volunteers, camp residents, and firefighters worked together to extinguish the flames, preventing further damage to neighboring shelters. One shelter was completely destroyed, while two others sustained damage during efforts to contain the fire.
“This is heartbreaking for all of us. Life here is already hard, and this has made it even worse. I hope the perpetrators are caught and held accountable,” said Nurullah, another resident of Block C and a committee member.
Local authorities have launched an investigation, suspecting intentional arson. With no immediate suspects, security measures have been tightened in the camp to prevent further incidents.
The fire has highlighted the precarious living conditions of the Rohingya refugees, who face constant challenges in their overcrowded and fragile shelters. The incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and support to ensure the safety of the camp’s vulnerable population.
