On 20 October (Thursday) Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said that Myanmar’s junta has agreed to take back the Rohingyas through Chinese mediation after confirming the identity of the Rohingyas.
He said this after an hour-long meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at Rashtriya Guest House Padma at around 12 o’clock.
At this time, senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Chinese Embassy were present.
AK Abdul Momen said that China has not confirmed anything about when the Rohingyas will be taken back to their country.
He said that preparations are being made for the logistical support of how the first batch of Rohingyas to be taken.
Inviting the representatives of Myanmar to visit the Rohingya camp, the Foreign Minister said that if the representatives of Myanmar visit the camp, the Rohingya will gain confidence. In the meeting, various issues of safe repatriation of Rohingyas and resolution of the crisis were discussed. However, the Chinese side did not speak to reporters after the meeting.
In a recent event, Ambassador Jiming indicated that based on what he had discussed with the Myanmar side, he was going to formally present the ‘results’ with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.
Despite Myanmar’s assurances, the country has not taken back a single Rohingya in the last five years. Bangladesh is sheltering more than 1.1 million Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasanchar.
