Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has called on the international community to take stronger action to address major global challenges, particularly climate change and the Rohingya crisis.
He made the remarks during the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting held in London. Representatives from 56 Commonwealth countries attended the meeting to discuss global issues and international cooperation.
During his speech, the foreign minister said the world is currently facing serious challenges, including climate risks and economic uncertainty. He emphasized the importance of stronger international cooperation to address these global problems.
Khalilur Rahman also highlighted the ongoing Rohingya crisis. He said Bangladesh continues to bear a heavy responsibility by hosting more than 200,000 Rohingya refugees who fled from Myanmar. He added that new arrivals are still being reported while humanitarian assistance for the refugees is gradually decreasing.
He urged the international community to remain engaged and continue supporting efforts to ensure the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
The meeting also discussed broader pressures on the international system and preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which is scheduled to take place in November this year.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the foreign minister also held several bilateral meetings with representatives from different countries to discuss cooperation and international support for Bangladesh.
