Family Background and Early Life

Hafez Mohammed Abbas, the beloved son of Jahid Alam, is a 23-year-old Rohingya youth from Rime Moung Hali village (Ye Aung Chaung, Mee Tai) in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, Myanmar. His father worked as a fisherman, managing fishing projects, selling fish, and taking on other small jobs to sustain the family. Despite limited means, his parents always valued education and encouraged their children to pursue learning, particularly Islamic studies.

Educational Journey in Islamic Knowledge

Abbas’s foundation in Islamic education was built through the unwavering support of his parents, teachers, and elder brothers. His brother Yusuf, now living in Malaysia, and his uncle Anwar, based in the United States, provided financial and moral assistance that allowed him to continue his studies during difficult times.

Among the teachers who played a central role in shaping his learning are Sheikh Riduwan, Sheikh Rafique, and Sheikh Md. Yousuf, whose guidance Abbas deeply respects. He completed his Hafiz (Qur’an memorization) at Al Madrasatul Islamia Tahrikussunnah in Kutupalong registered refugee camp under the mentorship of Hafez Kamal and Hafez Osman. Remarkably, he memorized the entire Qur’an in just one year and two months—an achievement he attributes to Allah’s mercy, his teachers’ dedication, and his own perseverance.

Later, he pursued higher Islamic studies at Patiya Madrasa in Chittagong, Bangladesh. At the time of admission, students were required to provide a birth registration certificate, and fortunately, Abbas had one, which enabled him to enroll. In his Dawrah Hadith class, which had around 950 students, he achieved the first position with a perfect score of 600 marks—a milestone he regards as a blessing from Allah.

Challenges and Overcoming Hardships

Financial difficulties remained a constant challenge throughout Abbas’s journey. As a poor student, he often struggled to afford books and daily necessities. His elder brother Yusuf consistently supported him, while teachers and relatives stepped in whenever he was in need. This collective support ensured that his studies continued without interruption.

Despite the rigorous demands of the Dawrah Hadith program, which left little time for personal study, Abbas persevered with focus, discipline, and reliance on Allah’s mercy. He credits his teachers not only for imparting knowledge but also for instilling discipline, patience, and sincerity—qualities that kept him steadfast in his pursuit of Islamic scholarship.

Achievements and Inspirations

Abbas chose Islamic studies because he believes they bring guidance and benefit in both this world and the Hereafter. For him, pursuing Islamic knowledge is an obligation and a means to serve others. His strongest encouragement came from his parents, elder brother, and respected teachers, especially Sheikh-ul Hadith Ridwan, Sheikh Rafique, and Sheikh Muhammod.

He also believes that Islamic scholars (Ulama) and Hafiz play an essential role in guiding today’s youth. Their knowledge, discipline, and moral guidance inspire young people to remain steadfast in their faith, build strong character, and contribute positively to society.

Vision and the Road Ahead

After completing his Dawrah Hadith, Abbas’s goal is to specialize in Ulumul Hadith and engage in Hadith research. He hopes to deepen his understanding, teach others, and contribute to spreading authentic Islamic knowledge. His long-term ambition is to serve as a teacher, writer, and researcher—dedicating his work for the sake of Allah and the betterment of his community.

Abbas emphasizes that the Rohingya community can play a vital role in supporting students who pursue higher Islamic studies by offering financial assistance, guidance, and encouragement. Such support not only allows scholars to focus on their studies but also motivates them to serve their people with sincerity and dedication.

Message to the Rohingya Youth and Community

To young Rohingya struggling to access education, Abbas shares this message:

“Never lose hope and always strive to learn, no matter how difficult the circumstances. Seek knowledge with patience, sincerity, and perseverance, and rely on Allah’s help. Education is the key to success in this world and the Hereafter. With determination, guidance, and hard work, you can overcome obstacles and achieve your goals.”

To the broader community, his advice is equally clear:

“Lead a life free from sins, return sincerely to Allah, abandon wrongdoings, and live a true Islamic life. At the same time, work for the betterment of the nation whenever possible. These principles bring peace, guidance, and blessings to individuals and society.”

A Story of Resilience and Faith

The story of Hafez Mohammed Abbas is one of resilience, faith, and dedication. From his humble beginnings in a fishing family in Arakan State to his remarkable achievements as a Hafiz and top-ranking Dawrah Hadith student, his journey reflects the power of perseverance, family support, and divine guidance.

With a vision rooted in service and scholarship, Abbas stands as a role model not only for young Rohingya but also for the wider Muslim Ummah.
