The traditional hand fan known as “Bisoin” usually comes in two types.
One is made out of split bamboo or cane beautifully hand woven in various geometrical designs. It has a round body with a stick handle. The woven pattern called thanda zuu or cool waving pattern because the fan gives tranquil wind when used. The fan requires special workmanship.
Another type of Bisoin is made with a piece of decorative (hand embroidered) cloth. Cane is used around the edge to make strong its border. It is also known as “Dulhar bisoin” which used in Rohingya weddings usually gifted to the groom from the bridal side. Many Rohingya families use it as a wedding gift. These are normally sold for around 1500 – 2000 kyats.
Nowadays in refugee camps, Rohingya people reuse coffee sachets, plastic or cardboard to make bisoin from easily available products.
