On Sunday (11 June) afternoon, a meeting with high level representatives of various countries, including the United Nations, was held on the Rohingya issue at Prime Minister’s office, where the representatives said that they will support any steps taken by the government on the Rohingya issue. The meeting was chaired by the Chief Secretary of the Prime Minister, Tofazzal Hossain Mia.
A press release from the Prime Minister’s Office informed that the meeting was attended by the ambassadors of China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Palestine, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, China, United Nations Resident Coordinator, UNHCR and World Food Programme.
Foreign Secretary Masood Bin Momen, Public Security Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office Secretary and Disaster Management and Relief Secretary were present in this meeting.
In the meeting, the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Palestine, Turkey, Qatar, Kuwait and China highlighted the positions of their respective countries and reiterated their commitment to support and assist Bangladesh in any initiative in the Rohingya crisis.
Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office informed that, in this meeting of the GCC Plus Forum, there was a detailed discussion on the provision of various assistance including food to the Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh in the current situation. During the meeting, Bangladesh emphasized on increasing the support and assistance of the international community for the safe, dignified and permanent repatriation of the Rohingyas to their home country Myanmar.
“The only solution to the crisis lies in dignified and permanent repatriation of the Rohingyas to their home country of Myanmar,” the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister informed the ambassadors of the Bangladesh government’s view on the matter. Stating that the Rohingyas have no chance of local inclusion, the Chief Secretary sought the cooperation of the participating ambassadors in building an extended temporary shelter for them at Bhashanchar.
Due to the current global economic crisis, the UN Resident Coordinator and WFP representative called on everyone to help by highlighting the reduction in the per capita allocation of aid organizations including the World Food Organization in humanitarian and food aid for the Rohingya.
On August 25, 2017, the Myanmar army started indiscriminately killing and torturing the Rohingya in the Rakhine region. Then more than 700,000 Rohingyas crossed the border and fled to Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh There were already hundreds of thousands of oppressed Rohingya here. As a result, the total number of Rohingyas who have taken refuge here is currently more than 1.2 million
On the other hand, on 9 June, the refugees held rally demanding safety and dignified repatriation with civil rights, relocation to own land, and no National Verification Card (NVC).
