Earlier in April, Around 300 Rohingya boat people including more than 33 children who were stranded in the Bay of Bengal were rescued by Bangladesh Navy and sheltered Bhashan Char.
Brad Adams, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) said, “Bangladesh authorities are using the pandemic as an excuse to detain refugees on a spit of land in the middle of a churning monsoon sea while their families anxiously pray for their return.”
These unfortunate Rohingyas wish to be united with their families who are dwelling in Cox’s Bazaar. On the other hand, Mohammed Khorshed Alam Khan, administrator for the district covering the island told AFP, “They will stay at Bhasan Char until they are repatriated to Myanmar.” He added the refugees are well taken care of and have better facilities than in the overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar where 1.1 million Rohingya refugees are sprawling.
