September 10, 2025, The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) has submitted evidence of crimes against the Rohingya to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and the Federal Court of Argentina.
Grave Crimes Documented
The IIMM confirmed that its investigators have gathered evidence showing that Myanmar’s military has unlawfully detained political opponents, tortured detainees, carried out group massacres, and committed systematic sexual and other forms of violence. Officials warned that if these crimes are ignored and perpetrators remain unpunished, further atrocities are likely.
Atrocities in Rakhine State
Civilians in Rakhine have suffered from airstrikes, drone attacks, torture, extrajudicial killings, and restrictions on humanitarian aid. Most Rohingya who remain in the region are direct victims of these abuses, while around 150,000 have fled to Bangladesh. Other ethnic communities in Rakhine have also been caught in the violence.
Investigations Without Bias
The IIMM stated that it is examining serious crimes committed by both the Myanmar military and armed groups in the region. Evidence includes records of unlawful detention, torture, and civilian attacks, as well as personal information of some perpetrators. Investigators stressed that evidence is collected without discrimination on the basis of political belief or ethnicity.
Calls for Accountability
Despite repeated international appeals, including ASEAN’s five-point consensus and Human Rights Council recommendations, the violence in Myanmar continues. The IIMM emphasized that ending impunity and holding perpetrators accountable is essential to halt ongoing suffering and to deliver justice for victims.
