On Wednesday, the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte confirmed to provide €1 million ($1.1 million) to aid Rohingya Muslims living in makeshift camps in Bangladesh’s southern district of Cox’s Bazar.
The news was confirmed by media during a bilateral meeting with visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Ihsanul Karim, Bangladeshi PM’s press secretary stated, “In addition to the existing assistance, [Italy] will provide €1 million for the help of the Rohingya citizens through the [UN refugee agency] UNHCR.”
Sheikh Hasina also urged the international community, including Italy, to pressure Myanmar to obey a recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the country’s treatment of its Rohingya minority in Rakhine state during the bilateral meeting.
