The Government of Japan has announced new financial support of 16.5 million dollars to assist Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.
The funding will support several humanitarian projects in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char, where large numbers of Rohingya refugees are currently living.
According to officials, the assistance will be delivered through several United Nations agencies, including UNICEF, the United Nations Population Fund, the International Organization for Migration, the World Food Programme, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The funding will help provide a range of essential services. These include food assistance and nutrition support, health and medical services, education for children, water and sanitation programmes, protection services for women and girls, shelter repair materials, clean cooking supplies, and support for farmers in host communities.
Nearly 1.2 million Rohingya refugees are currently living in Bangladesh, most of them in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. Many families continue to face difficult living conditions and rely heavily on humanitarian assistance.
Japan stated that the new funding aims to help protect lives, strengthen basic services, and support both refugees and host communities in building greater resilience.
Since the Rohingya crisis escalated in 2017, Japan has contributed more than 250 million dollars in humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees and affected communities in Bangladesh.
Japan also said it will continue working with the Government of Bangladesh, United Nations agencies, and international partners to support Rohingya refugees and pursue a long term solution to the crisis.
