Junta navy forces arrested 23 Rohingya from Pauktaw Township near Sittwe while they were returning home after purchasing essential supplies from Kyawktaw, according to local sources.
The group had traveled to Kyawktaw on March 5 with permission from the Arakan Army (AA), which allows Rohingya from Pauktaw to buy goods once a week. Due to the junta’s blockade, they had to pass through Mrauk U Township—an area under AA control—to reach Kyawktaw. Many Rohingya in Pauktaw, Mrauk U, Ponnagyun, and Rathedaung rely on Kyawktaw for essential supplies, as goods are transported there from India through Paletwa Township.
However, recent airstrikes in Kyaukphyu Township forced them to take an alternative route on their way back. As they neared Sittwe, junta naval forces intercepted and arrested them on March 7. Initially, they were taken to No. 2 Police Station in Sittwe before being transferred to No. 1 Police Station for interrogation. Reports indicate that authorities are investigating whether they have ties to the Arakan Army.
A resident from Pauktaw, who wished to remain anonymous, told Rohingya Khobor:
“These people were simply trying to bring food and supplies for their villages. The Arakan Army allowed them to travel, yet the junta forces arrested them. This is a clear act of oppression against the Rohingya.”
Another source familiar with the situation added:
“The junta has been blocking essential supplies for months, and people have no choice but to find alternative routes. Now, even that is being criminalized. These innocent civilians must be released immediately.”
The arrest of these 23 individuals highlights the ongoing hardships faced by Rohingya communities, who remain caught between armed conflicts and military-imposed restrictions, limiting their access to basic necessities.
This latest incident raises further concerns about the junta’s persecution of Rohingya civilians, as they continue to struggle for survival amid conflict and displacement.
