A Rohingya man was killed after being shot during a violent clash between rival groups inside a Rohingya refugee camp in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, late Friday night, according to Bangladeshi authorities.
The incident took place around midnight on 9 January at Block I of Nayapara Registered Rohingya Camp 26 under Hnila Union in Teknaf upazila. The information was confirmed by Md Kawsar Sikder, Additional Deputy Inspector General and Commanding Officer of the 16 Armed Police Battalion.
The deceased was identified as Nur Kamal, 25, a resident of the same camp.
Clash between rival groups
Police said Nur Kamal was allegedly involved in criminal activities inside the camp and had formed his own group. According to law enforcement officials, his group had been in long standing conflict with another group led by a man named Khaleq over control and influence within the camp.
Late Friday night, tensions escalated into violent clashes, during which gunfire broke out between the two groups.
After receiving information, members of the Armed Police Battalion rushed to the scene. However, those involved in the attack had fled before security forces arrived.
Victim dies from gunshot and sharp weapon injuries
During the clash, Nur Kamal was shot and also sustained injuries from sharp weapons. He was taken to a clinic inside the camp, where the on duty doctor declared him dead.
Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing. The exact cause and sequence of events will be confirmed following further investigation.
Kamal’s body was sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
