The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) has urged ASEAN to take immediate steps to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting the Rohingya community. The organization emphasized the need for a safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Arakan.
Azmi Abdul Hamid, the president of MAPIM, stated on January 30 that ASEAN has the capacity to engage with the junta authorities through diplomatic channels. He stressed that the regional body should hold the Myanmar junta accountable for its crimes against humanity and facilitate humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees.
MAPIM also encouraged ASEAN to mobilize financial resources, experts, and necessary aid to support relief efforts for Rohingya refugees currently living in Bangladesh and other countries.
Furthermore, the organization suggested that ASEAN should collaborate with the junta authorities, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and Bangladeshi authorities to develop a structured plan for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees. Ensuring their safety and protecting their rights upon return should be a key priority.
In addition, MAPIM highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of genocide and persecution in Arakan. The organization believes ASEAN must take the lead in finding long-term solutions to prevent further suffering and forced displacement of the Rohingya people.
