Mandalay, Myanmar – March 29, 2025
A deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Mandalay on March 28, leaving at least 700 people dead and more than 1,640 injured. Dozens remain missing as emergency crews race to locate survivors under the rubble.
The quake struck at approximately 12:51 PM local time and was centered around 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay city. Tremors were felt across central Myanmar, with reports of damage from Sagaing, Magway, and parts of Shan State.
Widespread Damage Across the Region
According to local sources and emergency response updates, the earthquake has caused widespread destruction:
- 1,591 homes destroyed
- 670 monasteries damaged
- 60 schools affected
- 3 bridges collapsed
- 290 pagodas damaged
Many urban and rural communities have been left without electricity, clean water, or access to medical care. Rescue teams continue to work in difficult conditions to reach affected areas, where landslides and collapsed infrastructure have slowed relief efforts.
International Assistance Begins to Arrive
Relief teams from China and Russia have begun arriving in the country to support search and rescue operations. India has also sent emergency supplies, including food, medicine, and tents for displaced families.
With communication networks disrupted in several regions, humanitarian groups are calling for urgent support to assist the survivors and rebuild basic services.
This disaster adds to the growing humanitarian crises in Myanmar, where conflict, displacement, and resource shortages have already placed millions in precarious conditions.
Aid agencies have emphasized the need for an impartial and coordinated response to ensure that all affected communities, regardless of ethnicity or religion, receive immediate support.
