Kutupalong, January 15 — An elderly preacher was reportedly abducted and brutally assaulted by an armed group around 8 PM while delivering a tawba (repentance) sermon at a mosque in Kutupalong Rohingya Refugee Camp-3, Balukhali (F-4).
Local sources reveal that the abductors transported the preacher to Mushora, where he was held captive for nearly an hour. During his detention, the preacher endured severe physical abuse before the attackers robbed him of his money, mobile phone, and wristwatch. Before releasing him, the perpetrators inflicted a serious facial injury using a sharp weapon, leaving him in critical condition.
Concerns Over Increasing Insecurity
The incident has raised alarm among camp residents, who are growing increasingly concerned about their safety amidst the rising cases of abductions and violence.
“This is not just an attack on an individual; it’s an attack on the peace and security of our community,” said a worried resident.
Calls for Swift Action
Local authorities and community leaders have strongly condemned the attack and called for urgent measures to bring the culprits to justice. They emphasized the need for increased security and stricter law enforcement within the refugee camps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Efforts are underway to investigate the incident, and residents have been urged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of the camp’s residents and the urgent need for coordinated efforts between local authorities, humanitarian organizations, and community leaders to ensure the safety of those already living in precarious conditions.
