Indonesian authorities are set to file charges against four Myanmar nationals accused of smuggling 264 Rohingya refugees into Indonesia using illegal routes, according to Tempo News. The suspects, reportedly serving as boat captains, transported the refugees from Myanmar, with the vessels landing at Alue Bu village in East Aceh’s West Peruru District on January 5.
Witnesses confirmed that the four individuals navigated the journey using magnetic compasses. The group of 264 Rohingya, comprised of 117 men and 147 women, was smuggled under circumstances that have raised concerns over the exploitation of vulnerable communities fleeing persecution.
Adi Wayu Nuhaydrat, head of East Aceh’s Criminal Investigation Department, stated on February 17 that the authorities suspect the four Myanmar nationals have previous experience in human smuggling. To bolster their case, investigators have obtained expert opinions from immigration specialists, international crime experts, and legal professionals.
The suspects are expected to be charged under Indonesia’s 2011 Immigration Law (Article 6 (2) and Article 120 (1)) as well as Criminal Code Article 55 (1). If convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, emphasizing their commitment to dismantling human smuggling networks operating in the region and ensuring that those who exploit vulnerable refugees face justice.
