On Sunday, Myanmar’s present de facto leader Gen. Min Aung Hlaing reached Moscow, Russia to attend the “Moscow Conference on International Security 2021“. The MCIS-2021 will be held from June 22nd to 24th. It is Hlaing’s second revealed trip abroad since he seized power in a coup last February.
The General was welcomed by the Russian ambassador to Myanmar at the airport. According to a source, he was invited by the Russian Defence Minister to join the conference.
The visit comes just after two days of the UN General Assembly adoption of a resolution called “Situation in Myanmar” where countries agreed to halt the flow of arms into Myanmar. But Russia was amongst 36 countries that abstained from voting.
State media said the Senior General will hold meetings with military and civilian officials and tour significant places in the Russian Federation including universities, factories and workshops during the trip. Joining him is Myanmar Navy chief Admiral Moe Aung, who will attend the International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS) to be held in St. Petersburg from June 23rd to 27th.
The IMDS showcases products and services including naval and commercial shipbuilding, weapons and armaments.
While the trade between Russia and Myanmar remains minimal, the countries have recently extended their military cooperation and Russia is now the number two military exporter to Myanmar following China.
