Kyauktaw Township, Rakhine State — May 15, 2025
The Myanmar military has launched a second devastating airstrike on Kyauktaw Township, killing at least 10 civilians, including children, and injuring four others. The attack took place around 2:00 p.m. on May 15, targeting the Ywar Ma Quarter, an area currently under Arakan Army (AA) control.
Eyewitnesses report that the junta’s aircraft dropped two 500-pound bombs and six cluster bombs directly onto a school compound, causing carnage among students and local residents.
“A loud explosion shook everything. When we reached the school, we saw children’s bodies on the ground. It was beyond words,” said U Hla Maung, a local resident who witnessed the aftermath.
Emergency responders said several of the injured are in critical condition, many suffering from severe blast injuries and limb loss. However, local medical facilities are overwhelmed and ill-equipped to handle such trauma cases.
“We’re doing all we can, but we don’t have the resources,” said a nurse at a nearby clinic. “Some patients are missing limbs, and we don’t even have enough blood.”
This is the second strike on Kyauktaw in recent weeks, signaling a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Myanmar junta and the Arakan Army, and raising alarm over the military’s deliberate targeting of civilian zones, including schools, religious sites, and shelters.
The incident follows a string of recent military airstrikes across Rakhine, Sagaing, Karenni, and Karen States, despite the junta’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire until May 31 in light of the recent earthquake.
Local communities, including Rohingya and other ethnic minorities, now fear further indiscriminate attacks, as civilian deaths mount and safe zones disappear.
“They say ceasefire, but all we hear are planes,” said one resident grimly.
