Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, U Kyaw Moe Tun, has called on the international community to take stronger action to address Myanmar’s ongoing crisis, including the plight of the Rohingya.
Speaking at a UN discussion in New York on February 28, he emphasized the need for global cooperation to find a sustainable solution that respects the rights and dignity of all affected communities.
Call for International Support
During the discussion, which focused on Myanmar’s ethnic minorities, U Kyaw Moe Tun highlighted the importance of holding a high-level international conference to address the situation of the Rohingya and other persecuted groups.
He stressed that for Rohingya refugees to return home with dignity, Myanmar must create a safe and suitable environment for them.
“We must work together to ensure a long-term and stable solution,” he urged, calling for global unity in tackling Myanmar’s humanitarian and political crisis.
Root Causes of the Crisis Must Be Addressed
The diplomat blamed Myanmar’s military dictatorship for the country’s ongoing instability, stating that military airstrikes and attacks on civilians have continued across the country since the 2021 coup.
He also highlighted the targeted persecution of Rohingya in Rakhine State, where hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
“As a result, millions of people in Myanmar live in fear every day, without security or peace,” he added.
Urgent Need for Regional and Global Action
U Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized that Myanmar’s people want peace and democracy, but achieving that goal requires stronger international action.
He urged neighboring countries and the global community to play a more active role in restoring stability and ensuring justice for all affected communities.
“The people of Myanmar need help, not just words. We urge all countries to take meaningful action to support peace and democracy in Myanmar,” he stated.
With millions displaced, including hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, international pressure is growing to push for a political resolution to Myanmar’s crisis.
However, the lack of commitment from major powers and the uncertain future of humanitarian aid continue to put the lives of Rohingya and other displaced communities at grave risk.
