Nayapara refugees have boycotted food rations citing irregularities by WFP.
Our correspondent reports on Saturday, refugees complained they were deprived of 45 tk of food rations, which was adjusted against the delivery of extra cooking oil. Refugees claim the cooking oil was made as a philanthropic donation this month and WFP had no right to adjust the cost in their regular rations. They also say they would have been content if the adjustments were made per household, but authorities insist they were made against individual rations.
Refugees get food rations worth 730 Bangladesh Taka in the camps.
The boycott continued throughout Sunday. Camp leaders however say they will reach a settlement with the refugees.
The WFP has come under fire from NGOs and rights activists for slashing food rations in IDP camps inside Arakan leading to near starvation circumstances in many parts of the restive state. Registered refugees in Bangladesh camps also suffer from shortages but they don’t remotely approach the horrors of IDP camps in Arakan state.
