Ayerawaddy region: On 27 October 2022 the Ayerawaddy Times published a report stating that since April 2022, nearly 600 undocumented Rohingya people have been arrested from seven townships: Pathein Township, Ray Kyi Township, Canepain Township, Whakhema Township Bo Kalay Township, Surrey and Kyaik Lat Townships, of Ayrawaddy region where 109 of them have been sentenced to 2 years in prison.
They (Rohingyas) were arrested while they were crossing Ayerawaddy region for Malaysia and Thailand.
“From April to September, there were more than 500. There were 2 incidents in September. 30 in Shwe Tainyan and 30 in Surrey. There are people who escaped without being arrested. Most of those arrested do not speak Burmese,” a source close to the regional police told the Ayerawaddy Times.
During the NLD led civilian government, undocumented Rohingya people were often arrested in Ayrawaddy every year and sent back to Rakhine state.
A human rights activist said that sentencing the arrested Rohingyas to prison in Ayerawaddy is human rights violation and furthers oppression against the Rohingyas.
