The Arakan National Party (ANP), the largest and most influential political party of Arakan state passed a resolution urging the government to assign repatriated Rohingyas to confined camps instead of their former villages from where they were driven out in the last few months.
The decision by the ANP came at a meeting held at their headquarters in Akyab on Thursday.
Top ranking ANP leaders and hundreds of activists were present at the meeting.
During the meeting, the ANP delegates made it very clear that they would not accept Muslims who had fled to Bangladesh unless they were confined to ‘prison-like camps from where they could not escape’. They said the villages from where the Muslims were evicted rightfully belong to the true people of the land, i.e. the Rakhine population.
Already the Rohingya populations in the southern townships were confined to IDP camps following the 2012 riots. The conditions of this prison like camps have been described by international media as the ‘worst in the world’. During the riots, the ANP, along with the 969 gang provided the foot soldiers for attacking Rohingya settlements.
