Norway’s State Secretary for International Development, Stine Renate Håheim, met with Md. Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser, in Dhaka today to reaffirm strong bilateral ties and discuss shared priorities, including regional development, democratic reforms, and the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
During the meeting, Håheim praised Bangladesh’s continued generosity in hosting over a million Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar, acknowledging the humanitarian burden and resilience shown by the country. She also reaffirmed Norway’s support for Bangladesh’s Interim Government and its efforts toward stability and democracy.
Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain expressed gratitude for Norway’s development cooperation and private sector engagement in Bangladesh, and emphasized the urgent need for international burden-sharing to resolve the Rohingya crisis. He stressed the importance of safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya population to their homeland in Myanmar.
Both sides discussed key areas of collaboration such as climate change, peacebuilding, and inclusive growth, and underscored the value of multilateral engagement in addressing global challenges.
As part of her two-day visit, Håheim is scheduled to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar tomorrow to assess the humanitarian conditions firsthand and engage with both refugees and aid organizations.
The visit signals Norway’s continued solidarity with Bangladesh and its commitment to supporting sustainable solutions for the Rohingya crisis and broader regional development.
