In yet another desperate bid for safety, around 260 Rohingya refugees arrived in Indonesia’s Aceh Province earlier this week. Local authorities reported that two motorboats carrying an estimated 264 individuals reached the shores at approximately 11 p.m. on January 5. The exact number of arrivals is still being verified.
The group, which includes men, women, and children, had endured weeks at sea before finally reaching safety. Local humanitarian organizations have joined forces with authorities to provide immediate assistance, including food, shelter, and medical care.
This arrival is part of a growing trend, as hundreds of Rohingya refugees have sought shelter in Indonesia in recent months. In late 2023, over 2,000 Rohingya reportedly landed in various parts of the country, fleeing persecution, dire living conditions, and life-threatening journeys across the sea.
The plight of the Rohingya remains a significant humanitarian crisis. Stateless and persecuted in Myanmar, many Rohingya have been forced to flee to neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, where overcrowded refugee camps offer little hope for a sustainable future.
Authorities in Indonesia continue to monitor the situation, offering humanitarian aid while urging regional and international stakeholders to address the root causes of the crisis.
Nurul Islam, leader of the Arakan Rohingya National Alliance (ARNA), expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s hospitality, saying, “The courage and compassion shown by the Indonesian people and authorities give hope to those who have endured unimaginable suffering. However, this is a temporary solution. The international community must step up and ensure justice, safety, and rights for the Rohingya.”
