Authorities in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district have detained 444 individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants, including people believed to be from Bangladesh and the Rohingya community.
Of the total, 265 individuals are currently being held at the Surabhi Kalyana Mandap, while the remaining detainees have been relocated to a temporary holding center at the Black Diamond College of Engineering and Technology.
According to police sources, many of those detained were working as laborers, masons, or street vendors in the region. Law enforcement officials have begun verifying their identity documents and immigration status. If found residing in India without valid papers, they may face legal action and potential deportation.
The mass detention comes following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which had received reports suggesting a growing presence of undocumented Bangladeshi migrants in the area.
The case has reignited debate over illegal immigration, border security, and the broader socio-economic factors that drive undocumented migration for employment. Authorities have stated that investigations are ongoing.
